Julian kept his stare pinned on a lone security guard until the buff brute meandered closer to the main entrance, turned his back, and pried a cell phone from his pants pocket.

A glint of sunlight shone off a bald spot near the top of the guy’s head while he texted, snorting at whatever was on the screen. Nice and distracted. Julian could have taken the rent-a-cop if the situation led to a showdown, but violent confrontation was never his first choice.

The guard safely categorized as a non-issue, Julian swept a quick assessment across the scene behind the theme park entrance, his eyes sharp for trouble.

The delivery driveway they’d followed led to a small parking lot and alcove for truck deliveries. Taylor and Mad Dog stood watch at the entry point.

Julian cased the area. Evenly spaced palm trees, their leaves swaying in a slight breeze, lined the service road until its terminus at two grungy dumpsters. Greenery sprouted through cracks in concrete, evidence of neglect. With any luck, the lack of care extended to patrolling and surveillance.

Mad Dog stood post at one of two access bays meant to accept supplies from big rigs. “I’ll take up the front.” He swooped a hand, ushering.

“Are you sure this is the right way in?” Suspicion etched in her frown, Taylor stayed put, reviewing one of the allegedly verified maps. “It seems a little run-down and forgotten.”

“Valid.” Julian looked over the grounds with fresh eyes, the trash receptacles abutting a patch of swampy green space strewn with litter, the blacktop of a street visible through trees. “Though if they don’t care enough to send security personnel back here, that works in our favor.”

Mad Dog scoffed, riding out a quick seizure. “Pretty sure. The secret entrance is supposed to be nondescript, and part of their M.O. is hiding in plain sight. Let’s hurry, before someone comes back here to smoke pot or whatever.”

Julian didn’t blame his wife for her skepticism. This whole operation couldn’t be any shadier if it tried. He pushed back on Mad Dog. “Pretty sure but not positive. Meaning you haven’t investigated.”

“No.” An engine hummed somewhere in the distance. Mad Dog craned his neck in the vicinity of the sound. “Not personally. But I know people who have, and I trust them.”

Taylor opened her mouth theatrically wide. “You’re kidding.”

Great, another curve ball. When would they stop getting walloped with unwanted surprises? Julian fought to keep his tone level, but a trace of his frustration hissed through. “You told us you had firsthand knowledge of the layout.”

Mad Dog’s lips thinned into a line. Sweat beaded at his temples, giving him a guilty sheen.

“You lied to us at the hotel.” Taylor fanned herself with the maps. “Why?”

“To get you moving forward,” their accomplice said with annoyance. “But do as you will. No skin off my nose if the two of you wanna turn back and regroup without me. Just hand over the maps and we’ll go our separate ways.” Shock flared in Mad Dog’s eyes, and he turned to face the wall, his hands fumbling quickly near his groin.
